Oh my English!

In today's world, there is no denying that English is extremely important. English is used in various fields and in so many areas of our daily lives. From information on a food can to information on the internet, about 90% are in English. So what does this tell us? The answer is simple: lack of proficiency in English will prevent us from getting access to vast information and knowledge. What more, English is the lingua franca; it is the tool used to communicate with people from different cultures and backgrounds. It is the mechanism that we use to be part of the global community and to expand our network.

Despite all these obvious reasons for learning English, it's quite sad to see that a lot of the younger generations feel that all these are just some legends used by teachers to make sure that they learn English. On the other hand, it is quite funny too because whenever my students (for example) watch English movies without subtitles, they feel frustrated for they do not understand; yet they still do not realize the importance of English. What more, some of them even watched 'Oh My English' regularly and yet when asked what did you learn from the series, they only answered 'Oh my English'! Maybe the reasons that we give are irrelevant to them? Or maybe they are too far-fetcehd (students don't see its relevance in their life at this very moment)?

Well, I came across this video shared by my friend and I feel that the reasons for learning English that are put forward in this video can be used to open the eyes of students and children in general, to the need to learn English. It is simple and realistic. So sit back, relax and enjoy!
